Our Story

Detached from
everyday noise

Ukiyo (浮世) is a Japanese concept meaning "the floating world," the art of living in the present moment without the weight of everyday worry.

Our glass-wrapped villas sit on stilts above the forest floor at the foot of Mt. Kenya, Africa's second-tallest peak. It's a fifteen-minute drive to Nanyuki town, though it won't feel like it.

This is an adults-only property. We welcome guests aged 18 and over, which keeps the pace slow and the property quiet.

We also run entirely off-grid and avoid single-use plastics throughout the property.

Ukiyo House is the base for most of what there is to do in the area. Tell us in advance and we'll have it arranged before you arrive.

Ngare Ndare Forest & Waterfall
A 45-minute trek to crystal pale-blue and green waters. Safe for swimming, extraordinary for photographs, and surrounded by ancient forest canopy.

Mt. Kenya Expedition
Trek, horseback ride, or take a helicopter to the peaks of Africa's first mountain. Half-day, full day, or multi-day options for all levels.

The Restaurant
A restaurant overlooking the pool, built from the same farm that supplies it. Breakfast is included; lunch, dinner, and sundowners are available à la carte, in the restaurant, the villa, or the fireside deck.

Celebration Experiences
Anniversary dinners, bridal showers, birthday weekends. We handle the setup, the menu, and the details you'd rather not think about.

Sundowners & Fireside Evenings
As the mountain turns amber, settle into a fireplace at the base of your villa. The gin bar pours from dehydrated citrus grown on the property.

Nanyuki Town & Beyond
The equator runs through Nanyuki. Local markets, wildlife conservancies, and the Laikipia plateau are all within easy reach of the property.

The Sauna
A wood-fired sauna set among the trees, available to every villa. A good way to end a day spent on the mountain.

A shared pool on the property for guests to cool off between activities, open throughout your stay.
